Why do people with expensive cars drive badly?

Here’s the situation: I’m riding home from basketball, when a Maserati Quattroporte GTS (not unlike the one above) pulls up next to us. “Cool!” I thought. Immediately, the Maserati driver proceeded to cut us off. Luckily, he turned into a parking lot a few hundred feet later. Our encounter was over.

*plot twist*

A bit later, he comes up next to us again. I am now officially confused. He slows down, so we speed up a bit and go into his lane. He immediately changes lanes. He then begins changing lanes randomly and for no reason. Finally, we reach a traffic light, but Maserati man needs to turn and isn’t in a turning lane. He then cuts off several backed up to get into the lane. He puts on his signal, but instead of turning at the light, Maserati man cuts across an empty gas station and goes onto the street he would have turned onto anyway.

My question is, how can people with nice cars not be bothered to drive courteously and follow the general rules of the road?

tl;dr version: Man in Maserati drives like a idiot, I sit here wondering why.

People in crappy car drive badly too, you just notice more when it’s an expensive car maybe.

Because they just don’t give a fuck, I think they think they’re above us plebes and they probably have another garage full of them of something happens to this one Maserati. :p

True. Most of the bad drivers I see have either a cheap car or a nice car. Not much in between. However, the price of the car seems to increase with the driver’s lack of courtesy.

Because the sort of people who spend that kind of money on a car tend to also be the sort of people that A) think they’re better than “normal” people, and B) like to show off that they have a “fast” (which may or may not be the case. I’m not sure the QP falls under that moniker) car.

There are also a lot of really cool people with really awesome cars, but as an ancient text once said, “It only takes one dead hooker to ruin the party.”

Full Disclosure, I’ve had some pretty fancy cars as my “daily driver.”

same reason some...

police

city workers

truck drivers

bus drivers

taxi drivers

old people

young people

enthusiasts

etc.

...drive bad as well. Bad driving can come from ANY vehicle.

Weaving in and out of lanes, not signaling, and cutting people off aren’t exactly examples of showing, but they’re also not really examples of thinking they’re “better” (except cutting people off).

Just because people have money it doesn’t make them intelligent or any bit as more competent at driving. Having a really nice car can make you drive like a bit of a dick because you can accelerate and turn quickly. Put that ability into the hands of someone who probably shouldn’t be driving because they get distracted as hell whenever they are behind the wheel and you get exactly what you saw today.

Replace all that with “Driving fast”, since that’s what those people think of as “driving fast” and also “doing what I want”, and it makes more sense.

if you can afford a Maserati Quattroporte GTS you can afford a coke habit, and it’s hard to drive like anything but a jerk when you’re all coked up.

You’d think someone with a nice car a) is an enthusiast and understands driving or b) is most likely well educated, and therefore wealthy, enough to know the general rules of the road.

I work at a Volvo, Mercedes. Lotus, Aston dealership. I promise you that less than 5% of our clients all year are anything close to being “enthusiasts”

In NYC it’s usually either cabs or minivans, but it’s tough to decipher the really bad drivers from just the general chaos of the city at all times.

Some people theorize that the rich people in expensive cars drive like they own the road because they think they do. I disagree. I think wealthy drivers in expensive cars run the gamut, just like anyone else. We just notice the misbehavior more when it’s in a flashy car.

It seems split between that and people who actually think the

part is true.
